Today is possible to run copies of historic Unix versions on your PC, much faster than the original hardware. Thanks to the folks at TUHS and PUPS who since the 90s had been fostering the preservation of the historic Unix heritage.

Our simulator of choice is, by far, Bob Supnik's SIMH. These are some of the historical Unix versions available to run:

• Unix V5 on the PDP-11, the oldest complete Unix that runs (currently...)


• Unix V6 on the PDP-11


• Unix V7 several variations, on the PDP-11


• Various BSD flavors a few versions up to 2.11BSD, or the PDP-11


• Ultrix 3.1 for the PDP-11


• Ultrix 32 for the VAX


• Several BSD versions for VAX, up to 4.4BSD.


• Many others non-Unix pieces of history.
